About

Who We Are

The Washington DC Metro HBCU Alumni Alliance is a dynamic coalition of alumni associations representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A shared passion unites us for education, advocacy, and community engagement. Our alliance strives to highlight the legacy of excellence and resilience that defines HBCUs while fostering meaningful connections among alumni, students, and supporters.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower and uplift our communities by leveraging the collective strength of HBCU alumni and supporters. We are committed to driving positive change through initiatives that promote access to education, economic empowerment, and community service.

By uniting under a shared purpose, we advocate for the continued success and relevance of HBCUs, ensuring that these institutions remain beacons of opportunity and cultural pride. Every project we undertake and every partnership we forge reflects our unwavering dedication to fostering growth, equity, and success for HBCU students, graduates, and the communities we serve.

What We Do

Advocate for HBCUs:

We work tirelessly to promote the value and contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. By raising awareness and collaborating with policymakers, we ensure that HBCUs receive the resources and recognition they deserve. Through events, campaigns, and public forums, we shine a light on the unique role HBCUs play in shaping leaders and advancing societal progress.

Support Students:

Our alliance is deeply invested in the success of HBCU students. We provide scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and academic resources to help them achieve their dreams. Whether it’s guiding students through college applications, offering career advice, or connecting them with alumni networks, we are here to support every step of their journey.

Strengthen Communities

We believe in giving back. Through volunteer projects, fundraising initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations, we address critical issues like hunger relief, health disparities, and access to education. Our community service programs are designed to create lasting impacts, improving the lives of individuals and families in need.

Our History

In January 2004, the Metro-Atlanta Alumni Chapter of Florida A&M University hosted a social mixer and fundraiser event and invited other HBCU alumni chapters to participate. In addition to promoting fellowship and fun, the event presented an opportunity to recruit new members for their individual chapters. The participation of chapters at this inaugural event was low; however, it generated enough excitement amongst the chapter members to prompt the creation of the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance (AHBCUAA).

During the first meeting, HBCU graduates brainstormed on how chapters can formally collaborate and work collectively as a critical mass to host fundraising events that one chapter couldn’t successfully execute on its own. Over time, the combined efforts grew to include community service efforts consistent with our mutual purpose of benefiting students and contributing to higher education.

In January 2012, several HBCU alums proposed to start an Alumni Alliance in the Washington, DC metro area. With the assistance of the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance (AHBCUAA) and soliciting support from other HBCUs alumni chapters in the Washington, DC metro area, there was overwhelming enthusiasm among the alumni chapters of the Washington, DC area. After working with area alumni chapters in many planning meetings to organize the Alumni Alliance, the Washington, D.C. Metro HBCU Alumni Alliance was officially incorporated June 6, 2012 in the District of Columbia.

Call To Action

There are many elements to our work. In addition to time, passion and commitment, there are many tangible resources that we need to bring our plans and events to fruition. We cannot deliver on our mission or achieve our goals without the support of our corporate sponsors. Partnership is at the core of our work and we continue to seek new partners to make our work possible.
